South Yorkshire has committed to allocate up to five percent of the fund’s total assets to local impact investments.

As part of this, it’s looking to invest between 2.5% and five percent of its assets directly within the South Yorkshire region.

Up to 2.5% of its assets can be invested outside South Yorkshire, so long as they create a tangible and demonstrable positive impact for South Yorkshire. This could include job creation for South Yorkshire residents, and infrastructure developments – such as energy generation projects that benefit the region.

Part of South Yorkshire’s Investment Strategy Statement, it’s said its preferred local investment sectors include residential needs, local development lending, and providing local venture capital, and supporting small and medium-sized enterprises.

The fund has also said it’s focused on maintaining a funding level at or above 120% by 2045 – which is 20 years from the actuarial valuation date. To achieve this, its actuary estimates that an investment return of around six percent per annum is required over the long term.
