The South Yorkshire Pensions Authority has announced it has signed a pledge to help combat pension scams.

It becomes the latest LGPS fund to sign the pledge, set up by The Pensions Regulator (TPR), which aims to encourage trustees, providers and administrators to do what they can to protect pension scheme members from scams.

As part of this, South Yorkshire has pledged to follow the principles of the Pension Scams Industry Group (PSIG) Code of Good Practice, committing to regularly warn members about pension scams and encourage members asking for cash drawdown to get impartial guidance from MoneyHelper.

It’s also committed to ensuring key staff understand what the warning signs of a scam are and that they’re kept up to date with industry changes by studying and using the resources on the ScamSmart, as well as TPR scams information and the PSIG code.

Outside of this, it will take appropriate due diligence measures by carrying out checks on pension transfers and documenting pension transfer procedures, and warning members if they insist on high-risk transfers being paid.
