The government has confirmed it plans to proceed with plans to give mayors and councillors access to the LGPS, following a consultation with the sector.

This will see elected members across local authorities in England given access to the LGPS in the 2026-27 year, with membership being put on the same basis as that given to other, non-elected members of the scheme – with a small number of exceptions to reflect their different employment status.

The move will bring them in line with authorities in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, where councillors in all three already have access to the LGPS.

All told, when asked whether mayors should be given access to the scheme, 75% said they should, while 72% believed councillors should be given access to the LGPS. Meanwhile, 66% of respondents said that – as far as possible – elected members should be treated the same as other members of the LGPS.
