LGPS Central has appointed former LPPI and London CIV man Greg Smith as the pool’s new chief of staff.
The appointment follows a period of growth and comes as the pool continues to evolve its operating model in response to the government’s Fit for the Future reform, with it now representing more than £100bn of collective investment assets on behalf of 14 partner funds.
Smith has a wide breadth of experience across the LGPS prior to joining Central as its new chief of staff, including as LPPI’s director of strategy and group company secretary, with his experience spanning governance, legal, strategic programmes and business development.
In his new role, he’ll work closely with chief executive Richard Law-Deeks, the executive committee and colleagues across the business to help coordinate key strategic priorities, continue to strengthen governance and support effective delivery for LGPS Central’s partner funds.
Reflecting on the appointment, Law-Deeks said: “Greg brings a strong combination of LGPS experience, governance expertise and strategic delivery capability.
“He joins us at an important stage in LGPS Central’s development, as we continue to build on the significant progress made across the business and strengthen the way we deliver for Partner Funds.
“With around £100bn of collective Partner Fund assets, our scale brings both opportunity and responsibility. Greg’s appointment will help ensure we remain well coordinated, well governed and focused on effective delivery as we continue to support Partner Funds and invest for long-term outcomes.
“We are delighted to welcome him to the team and look forward to working with him as we build on the strong foundations already in place.”
Smith added: “I am proud to be joining LGPS Central and to be part of its continued journey, bringing experience from within the pooling sector.
“What attracted me to the organisation is the opportunity to help provide a first-class service to partner funds, built on the benefits of scale and the opportunities that come with working together more effectively.
“LGPS Central has built strong foundations and clear momentum, and I am looking forward to working with Richard, the executive committee and colleagues across the business to help move the organisation forward, including supporting the establishment of the new office and building on what is already in place.
“I also look forward to working with partner funds and supporting the continued embedding of governance arrangements that help ensure the organisation operates effectively and delivers consistently for all.
“For me, this role is about helping build an organisation that combines strong governance, economies of scale and a clear focus on long-term outcomes, including the opportunity to have a positive influence at a local level.”
