Surrey County Council backs single purpose pensions authority

Surrey County Council has endorsed a recommendation from its pension committee to form a single purpose pensions authority (SPPA).

The move will see the fund join the ranks of West Yorkshire and the LPFA in adopting an SPPA model.

It follows a vote from the committee back in October to move to such a model, with its administering authority disappearing as a result of local government reorganisation.

The move, it stated, would provide optimal governance with greater independence and the ability to more effectively manage potential conflicts of interest. It also believes such a move would most effectively manage a local growth plan with strategic authorities.

Speaking at the time, Surrey Pension Fund Committee chair Councillor Richard Tear said: “I am very pleased at the outcome of the vote. This decision puts members and employers at the forefront of everything the Pension Fund does.”
